South Bend, Ind. — The South Bend Medical Foundation (SBMF) is proud to announce that Margaret Matthys, a senior at Saint Joseph High School in South Bend, has been selected as the recipient of the 2026 South Bend Medical Foundation High School Hero’s Scholarship.

The SBMF High School Hero’s Scholarship Fund was established to support the educational aspirations of exceptional students who demonstrate a strong commitment to community health by donating at least three units of blood during their high school career. The scholarship honors students who lead in the classroom while championing the lifesaving mission of blood donation within their schools and communities.

Margaret exemplifies the spirit of a High School Hero. A dedicated student leader, she has balanced academic excellence with a deep commitment to service, encouraging peers to participate in blood drives and advocating for the importance of giving blood to help others in need.

Following graduation, Margaret plans to continue her education at the University of Louisville, where she will pursue a degree in nursing. A path that reflects her passion for caring for others and serving her community.

“Today, more than ever, it has become increasingly important for the next generation of blood donors to become active participants. Margaret represents the very best of our High School Hero’s program,” said Tim Travis, President and CEO of the South Bend Medical Foundation. “Her leadership, compassion, and commitment to blood donation make a meaningful difference today and point to a bright future in health care.”

Congratulations, Margaret! The South Bend Medical Foundation applauds your achievements and encourages you to continue being an ambassador for blood donation wherever you call home.
