TJ DeStefano

It's a position I didn't go to school for, but it allows me to keep my mind sharp and functional which is exactly what I was looking for. It's a good place to work with flexibility from the people you are working with and working for.

TJ DeStefano

A short conversation about the South Bend Medical Foundation with Administrator Bob King, led Ohio State graduate Thaddeus (TJ) DeStefano to apply for a position as Support Tech in the Flow Cytometry/ Molecular Pathology Department.

With a degree in Biology, TJ was tossing around the idea of going to medical school or to pursue a graduate degree.

TJ wasn't aware that South Bend Medical Foundation had positions that would allow him to pursue an interest he had developed in Genetics and with a little prompting he decided to apply.

With a little over 15 months at the Foundation now, TJ's days are filled with various Molecular tests defining viral infections and genetic mutations. Words such as Hepatitis, HIV, H1N1 and PCR have become normal phrases to him as he extracts the DNA from whole blood and sends it through various steps of instrument detection.

The knowledge he's obtained during his time at South Bend Medical Foundation proves as a helpful learning basis as he decides whether to continue his stay at the Foundation or begin his journey in medical school.
