Vitamin B5 pantothenic acid, is a water-soluble vitamin. It functions in the oxidation of fatty acids and carbohydrates and the synthesis of amino acids, fatty acids, ketones, cholesterol, phospholipids, and steroid hormones. As part of acetyl CoA or acyl carrier protein, it is essential in energy metabolic pathways, such as reactions involving ATP production from the metabolism of fats and carbohydrates. The vitamin B5 also plays a role in adrenal function and in porphyrin and hemoglobin biochemistry. It is a relatively safe vitamin supplement that may help in fatigue, stress or anxiety management after illness or surgery. It also has been shown to improve wound healing and some acne treatments. Deficiency in pantothenic acid may lead to symptoms such as parestheses, physical or muscle weakness, abdominal pains, susceptibility to infection and depression. A greater than 1000 fold intake (10 grams) of the minimal daily requirement often leads to diarrhea.
