  • Spec Type:
    Urine, 24-hour
  • Spec Container:
24-hour urine container (no preservative added)
  • Pref Vol:
    8.0 mL
  • Min Vol:
    4.0 mL
  • Spec Collect:
To begin collection of timed specimen, have patient urinate, noting date and exact time
Discard this first portion of urine, but document date and time of voiding on container label and test requisition as "start" of timed specimen
Save all urine voided during designated time period, including portion voided at exact end of time period
IMPORTANT: Refrigerate entire specimen (2-8°C) during and after collection to prevent bacterial growth
Document date and time of final voiding on label and requisition as "end" of timed specimen
  • Spec Process:
Upon completion of collection, mix entire specimen well and measure 24-hour volume
Pour off 8.0 mL of urine into plastic transport tube(s) (Min: 4.0 mL)
Send urine aliquot with notation of 24-hour urine volume on aliquot label and on requisition
  • Spec Store Transport:
    Refrigerated
  • Spec Stability:
    2 hours room temperature (20-30°C)
    1 week refrigerated (2-8°C)
1 month frozen (-20°C) – Do not use frost-free units that undergo repeated freeze/thaw cycles
  • Spec Reject:
    Sample not refrigerated
  • Spec Remarks:
    Keep refrigerated at all times
Random urine specimens are acceptable, but not preferred
    Urine supernate is also acceptable
  • Methodology:
    Immunofixation Electrophoresis
    Nephelometry
  • Clinical Significance:
    Refer to:
ARUP Consult | The Physician's Guide to Laboratory Test Selection and Interpretation
  • Reference Range:

    Total Protein, Urine: 10-140 mg/d
    Albumin, Urine: Detected
    Alpha-1 Globulins, Urine: None detected
    Alpha-2 Globulins, Urine: None detected
    Beta Globulins, Urine: None detected
    Gamma, Urine: None detected
    Free Urinary kappa Light Chains 0.14 - 2.42 mg/dL
Free Urinary Kappa Excretion/Day: By report
    Free Urinary Lambda Light Chains: 0.02 - 0.67 mg/dL
Free Urinary Lambda Excretion/Day: By report
    Free Urinary Kappa/Lambda Ratio 2.04 - 10.37 (ratio)
    IFE Interpretation: By report

    Interpretive Data:
Total urinary protein is determined nephelometrically by adding the albumin and kappa and/or lambda light chains. This value may not agree with the total protein as determined by chemical methods, which characteristically underestimate urinary light chains.

  • Day Run:
    Mon-Fri
  • Time Reported:
    2-6 days
  • Test Type:
    URINE
