Diet, medication, and nutritional supplements may introduce interfering substances. Patients should be encouraged to discontinue nutritional supplements, vitamins, minerals, nonessential over-the-counter medications (upon the advice of their physician). High concentrations of iodine may interfere with elemental testing. Abstinence from iodine-containing medications or contrast agents for at least 1 month prior to collecting specimens for elemental testing is recommended. - Spec Collect:
To begin collection of timed specimen, have patient urinate, noting date and exact time
Discard this first portion of urine, but document date and time of voiding on container label and test requisition as "start" of timed specimen
Save all urine voided during designated time period, including portion voided at exact end of time period
IMPORTANT: Refrigerate entire specimen (2-8°C) during and after collection to prevent bacterial growth
Document date and time of final voiding on label and requisition as "end" of timed specimen - Spec Process:
Upon completion of collection, mix entire specimen well and measure 24-hour volume
Pour off 8.0 mL of urine into trace element-free transport tube(s) (Min: 1.0 mL)
Send urine aliquot with notation of 24-hour urine volume on aliquot label and on requisition - Spec Stability:
1 week room temperature (20-30°C)
2 weeks refrigerated (2-8°C)
1 year frozen (-20°C) – Do not use frost-free units that undergo repeated freeze/thaw cycles - Spec Reject:
Acid preserved urine
Urine collected within 48 hours after administration of a gadolinium (Gd) containing contrast media (may occur with MRI studies) - Spec Remarks:
ARUP studies indicate that refrigeration of urine alone, during and after collection, preserves specimens adequately, if tested within 14 days of collection. - Methodology:
Inductively Coupled Plasma/Mass Spectrometry (ICP/MS) - Reference Range:
