  • Also Known As:
    Iodide
  • Spec Type:
    Serum
  • Spec Container:
Dark blue (royal) top (trace element-free serum) tube provided in SBMF “Trace Metal Collection Kit”
  • Pref Vol:
    1.0 mL
  • Min Vol:
    0.3 mL
  • Fasting:
    No
  • Patient Prep:
High concentrations of gadolinium are known to interfere with most metals tests. If gadolinium-containing contrast media has been administered, a specimen should not be collected for 48 hours.
  • Spec Collect:
    Routine venipuncture
Disinfectants (such as Betadine) that contain iodine should not be used during venipuncture
  • Spec Process:
    Clot 30 minutes
    Promptly centrifuge 15 minutes
Immediately transfer serum to separate plastic, trace element-free tube
  • Spec Store Transport:
    Refrigerated
  • Spec Stability:
    24 hours room temperature (20-30°C)
Greater than 24 hours, refrigerate (2-8°C)
  • Spec Reject:
    Specimens other than serum
    Severely icteric sample
  • Methodology:
    Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS)
  • Use:
    Determination of iodine overload
Monitoring iodine levels in individuals taking iodine-containing drugs
  • Clinical Significance:
Iodine is an essential element that is required for thyroid hormone production. The measurement of iodine serves as an index of adequate dietary iodine intake and iodine overload, particularly from iodine-containing drugs such as amiodarone.
  • Reference Range:

    40-92 ng/mL

    Interpretive Data:
Values between 80 mcg/L and 250 mcg/L have been reported to indicate hyperthyroidism.

Values >250 mcg/L may indicate iodine overload.

    Cautions:
There are no known analytical interferences with this procedure.

Administration of iodine-containing contrast media will yield elevated results.

  • Additional Test Info:

This test was developed and its performance characteristics determined by Laboratory Medicine and Pathology, Mayo Clinic. This test has not been cleared or approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
