Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS) - Use:
Detect presence of Gamma-Hydroxybutyrate (GHB) - Clinical Significance:
Gamma-Hydroxybutyrate (GHB) is a naturally occurring substance present in the tissues of humans and other mammals. GHB may be synthesized as a sodium salt and used as a rapid acting anesthetic and hypnotic agent. Currently, legitimate use of synthesized GHB in the United States is limited to investigational purposes only. However, GHB has been marketed illicitly since the 1990s. GHB has been used by athletes to increase muscle mass and more recently as a club drug in "rave" clubs along with other club drugs such as LSD, MDMA and Rohypnol®. The effects of GHB when taken orally are dose dependent and range from dizziness, euphoria, and mild sedation to levels of deep sleep. - Reference Range:
