Phenobarbital is used primarily for the long-term treatment of generalized tonic-clonic (grand mal) seizures and cortical focal seizures. For children under five years of age, phenobarbital is the antiepileptic of choice. Older children and adults are treated first with phenytoin; phenobarbital is added if needed. - Reference Range:
