ImmunoCAP™ Fluorescent Enzyme Immunoassay (FEIA) - Use:
Diagnose and manage patients with atopic disease such as asthma, hay fever, eczema, and patients with respiratory allergies or parasitic infections - Clinical Significance:
Immunoglobulin E (IgE) is a class of immunoglobulins important in the mediation of allergic responses. IgE is synthesized primarily within plasma cells found in the mucosa of the respiratory and intestinal tracts and is secreted into the blood. The mechanism of action of the allergic response involves the binding of IgE through its Fc portion to cell surface receptors of mast cells and basophils. After exposure to specific allergens recognized by IgE, the cells release vasoactive amines causing Type I hypersensitivity reactions. IgE levels may be increased in not only allergic disease, but also parasitic infections and bronchopulmonary aspergillosis. - Reference Range:
IgE, Quantitative Geometric Mean 1 SD 2 SD kU/L kU/L kU/L ___________ _______ _______ _______ Newborn 0.5 1 2 1 year 3 15 83 2 years 6 29 133 3 years 12 35 101 4 years 7 33 144 5 years–Adult 20 75 260 For any age group, the reference range is up to the 1 SD value. Levels less than the geometric mean indicate atopic genesis not probable. Levels greater than the 2 SD value indicate atopic genesis highly probable. Levels between 1 and 2 SD are equivocal and in children may predict future onsit of allergic disease.
