  • Clinical Significance:

Urine from healthy men and non-pregnant women should not contain detectable levels of hCG. In normal pregnancy, 20 mIU/mL hCG is reported to be present in urine 2 to 3 days before the first missed menstrual period. The levels of hCG continue to increase up to 200,000 mIU/mL at end of the first trimester.

The test detects the presence of hCG. If detectable levels of hCG are found under certain pathological conditions, such as trophoblastic disease, the test will give a positive result. The results of this test should be used as a supplement to other clinical information. If negative results occur and pregnancy is still suspected, it is good practice to re-sample and re-test patients after 48 hours. Results of the test should be interpreted in conjunction with other clinical and laboratory data available to the clinician. Test results should be confirmed using a quantitative hCG assay prior to the performance of any critical medical procedures. Urine specimens with a low specific gravity may not be representative for levels of hCG. The test may need to be repeated using a first morning specimen.

  • Reference Range:

    Negative

    Interpretive Data:
The intended use of the test is to aid in the early detection of pregnancy. It has been reported that false negative results for urine hCG may occur due to presence of high concentrations of hCG beta core fragment (hCGbcf) in the urine sample. hCGbcf is predominantly found in urine samples and high concentrations toward midterm pregnancy. Confirmation of questionable negative urine hCG results with serum samples is recommended.
