Routine venipuncture
Immediately after collection, gently invert lavender top tube to mix well
Patient's hematocrit value (required for folate testing):
– Perform hematocrit on lavender tube, or
– If patient has not been transfused, use hematocrit result obtained within past 3 days, or
– Send separate lavender top tube to SBMF for hematocrit testing - Spec Process:
Serum sample
– Clot 30 minutes
– Promptly centrifuge 15 minutes
Whole blood sample
– Do not centrifuge
– Record patient’s hematocrit result on tube label and on test requisition
– Refrigerate (2-8°C) entire tube of EDTA whole blood and transport refrigerated - Spec Store Transport:
