14C-Serotonin Release Assay (SRA) - Use:
Used to detect heparin-associated antibodies, which are found in some patients undergoing heparin therapy - Clinical Significance:
Heparin is one of the most common causes of drug-induced thrombocytopenia. Heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT) is subdivided into two groups. Type I is attributed to a direct interaction between heparin and platelets. Type I HIT is generally considered a benign condition and is not antibody-mediated. Type II HIT is of immunological origin and characterized by immune-mediated activation and clearance of platelets. It occurs 5-14 days after heparin exposure in 1-3% of patients and is associated with thrombosis. In untreated HIT, progression to thrombosis occurs in up to 50% of patients. Venous thromboembolism accounts for the majority of the thrombotic events but arterial thrombosis may also occur. - Reference Range:
Less than 0.40 O.D.
Interpretive Data
OD of the reaction greater or equal to 0.4 indicates the presence of a heparin-associated antibody. - Additional Test Info:
If PF4 ELISA is greater than or equal to 0.40 O.D., then Serotonin Release Assay will be added and reported separately. Additional charges may apply. - Day Run:
