  • Clinical Significance:
Beta-2glycoprotein 1 (beta-2 GP1) is a polypeptide synthesized in hepatocytes, endothelial cells and trophoblastic cells. Normal individuals may have low levels of IgG autoantibodies to beta-2 GP1. Pathologic levels of these autoantibodies occur in patients with various clinical signs and symptoms including thrombosis (arterial or venous), pregnancy morbidity (unexplained fetal death, premature birth, severe preeclampsia, or placental insufficiency), unexplained cutaneous circulatory abnormalities (livido reticularis or pyoderma gangrenosum), thrombocytopenia, hemolytic anemia, or non-bacterial thrombotic endocarditis. Beta-2 GP1 antibodies can also be seen with increased frequency in patients with systemic rheumatic diseases, particularly lupus erythematosus.
Positive results for IgG and/or IgM beta-2 GP1 are consistent with anti-phospholipid syndrome (APS), but alone cannot be relied on to rule out APS. In addition, low levels of antibodies to beta-2 GP1 are of uncertain significance.
