Used as an indicator of infectious disease and inflammatory states. While this test is not highly specific for any disease state, it does an outstanding job of detecting and monitoring acute inflammation. CRP may be used for checking of rheumatoid arthritis or rheumatic fever exacerbations. The test might also be useful to monitor response to therapy. CRP has been proven to be particularly useful in detecting occult infections, acute appendicitis, particularly in leukemia and in postoperative patients.
- Clinical Significance:
CRP is one of the acute-phase proteins, the serum or plasma levels of which rise during general, non-specific response to infections and non-infectious inflammatory processes such as rheumatoid arthritis, cardiovascular disease and peripheral vascular disease. CRP is synthesized in the liver and is normally present as a trace constituent of serum or plasma.
In various disease states resulting in tissue injury, infection or inflammation, CRP values may rise above normal to 20 to 500 mg/L within four to eight hours after an acute event. As elevated CRP values are always associated with pathological changes, the CRP assay provides useful information for the diagnosis, therapy and monitoring of inflammatory processes and associated diseases. Increases in CRP values are non-specific and should not be interpreted without a complete clinical history.
