Differentiate iron deficiency anemia (increased transferrin) from hypochromic microcytic anemias (index of nutritional normal to low transferrin) status - Clinical Significance:
Transferrin serves to transport iron in the blood to the iron depots in the liver, spleen and bone marrow as well as to the iron-consuming organs, especially the hemopoetic tissues. Synthesis of transferring in the liver is influenced by the iron metabolism. Iron deficiency results in a rise in synthesis and, thus, in increasing serum concentrations, whereas, in iron overload synthesis is low. The determination of serum transferring is therefore used for diagnosing latent and manifest iron deficiency and iron overload. Transferrin is negative acute-phase protein, i.e., its serum concentrations are low during inflammatory and malignant disease. - Reference Range:
