Toxoplasmosis, caused by the parasite Toxoplasma gondii, has been implicated in serious congenital abnormalities following maternal infections just prior to or during pregnancy. Usually a mild or asymptomatic disease in adults, toxoplasmosis acquired in utero has resulted in blindness, encephalomyelitis, mental retardation, convulsions, and death in infected neonates. In addition, predisposition to severe toxoplasmosis infection is common in persons with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) or in persons who are otherwise immunocompromised.
  • Reference Range:

    Toxoplasma IgG Antibody

         REFERENCE RANGE     INTERPRETATION
    < 6.4 IU/mL     Negative;no infection or exposure is likely.
6.4-9.9 IU/mL     Indeterminate; repeat testing on a new sample in 10-14 days is recommended.
    >or= 10.0 IU/mL    Positive;indicative of a previous exposure to the organism.

    Toxoplasma IgM Antibody

         REFERENCE RANGE     INTERPRETATION
         < 0.90  Negative
         0.90 - 0.99  Indeterminate
