  • Use:
    Detection of IgG antibody to Measles (Rubeola) virus in human sera
  • Clinical Significance:
    The incubation period of Measles (rubeola) averages 10–12 days from exposure to prodrome (early non-specific symptoms) and 14 days from exposure to rash (range: 7–18 days). The disease can be severe and is most frequently complicated by diarrhea, middle ear infection, or bronchopneumonia. Encephalitis occurs in approximately one of every 1,000 reported cases; survivors of this complication often have permanent brain damage and mental retardation. Death occurs in 1–2 of every 1,000 reported Measles cases in the United States. A recent study showed that 95% of persons that were twice vaccinated against Measles exhibit measurable serum antibodies 20 years post vaccination.
  • Reference Range:

    ≤ 0.8 AI = Negative - No IgG antibodies specific to Measles detected. Patient is presumed not to have had a previous exposure to Measles through infection or vaccination
    0.9-1.0 AI = Equivocal results; obtain an additional sample for re-testing.
    ≥ 1.1 AI = Positive - IgG antibody to Measles detected. This may indicate that the patient was exposed to Measles through infection or vaccination.

    AI = Antibody Index

  • Additional Test Info:

    This test is not intended to be diagnostic for infectious disease and should only be utilized to establish serological status of the patient to Measles.

    Positive results may be found in patients that have not been immunized. In these cases, the patient has a positive serological status to the infectious agent through natural exposure. False positive results may occur. Repeat testing or testing with a different device may be indicated in some settings, e.g., patients with low likelihood of prior infection or vaccination.
