Immunochemical assay of specific antibodies to streptococcal metabolites provides valuable information regarding past streptococcal infection (rheumatic fever, scarlet fever, tonsillitis, glomerulonephritis, etc.). Among the assays for antibodies to various streptococcal exoenzymes, the antistreptolysin O assay should be given prominence as a sensitive parameter since it has been found to be elevated in about 80 to 85% of the cases. - Reference Range:
