  • Patient Prep:
    If necessary, acceptable to obtain samples with warm saline enema solutions or Fleet Phospho-Soda
    Do not obtain samples by using enemas containing mineral oil, bismuth, iron, or magnesium compounds
    Wait at least 1 week after barium procedures or laxatives before collecting O&P samples
  • Spec Collect:
    Add amount of feces to container sufficient to cause solution level to rise even with container "fill line"
    Do not over-fill – solution level must be at indicated "fill line"
    Mix feces and solution in container by gentle inversion

    Giardiasis can mimic acute viral enteritis, bacillary dysentery, bacterial or other food poisonings, acute intestinal amebiasis, or "traveler's diarrhea."

    No Giardia detected by Enzyme Immunoassay

    One negative result does not rule out a parasitic infection
