Detect cases of enterobiasis (Enterobius vermicularis parasitic infestation)
  • Clinical Significance:

Enterobius vermicularis, commonly called pinworm, is a small roundworm belonging to the class of nematodes. The infective stage of pinworm is the ova. Therefore, the diagnosis of infection is made on the detection of ova in the specimen.

The prevalence of infection with Enterobius vermicularis is probably considerably underestimated. The organism is primarily a parasite of young children; the rapid development of its eggs to the infective stage and their ability to persist for extended periods in the environment leads to rapid dissemination of the infection from child to child and to adults.

The infection is especially troublesome in young children; large worm burdens may cause extreme pruritus, loss of sleep, and irritability. Adult females may enter the vagina and subsequently the uterus or fallopian tubes, where thy die. Disintegration of the dead worms and liberation of the eggs contained in utero result in an inflammatory response and granuloma formation about the eggs in these sites.
