  • Spec Type:
    Urine, clean-catch
  • Spec Container:
Sterile plastic container with tightly fitting lid for urinalysis
           –plus–
if urine sample volume greater than 3.0 mL, Urine C&S Transport Kit for culture
Note: if sample volume less than 3.0 mL, urine remaining in sterile plastic container
  • Alt Spec Type:
    Urine, catheterized
  • Pref Vol:
Entire volume of timed urine specimens
  • Min Vol:
At least 12.0 mL urine for urinalysis - plus - sufficient urine volume for culture
  • Fasting:
    No
  • Spec Collect:
    Standard procedure for clean-catch urine
    Standard procedure for catheterized urine
         – Note: Preferred specimen is early morning urine which often yields the highest bacterial counts from overnight incubation in bladder
  • Spec Process:

    Urinalysis Specimen:
         – If a portion of urine has been transferred to a urine C&S transport tube for possible culture (see below), the urine for routine urinalysis can be maintained room temperature for up to 2 hours
         – If portion of urine has NOT been transferred to urine C&S transport tube, urine for routine urinalysis and possible culture must be refrigerated within 20 minutes of collection
         – Urine specimens for routine urinalysis can remain refrigerated up to 12 hours

Urine Culture Specimen - High Volume (3.0-5.0 mL):
         – Immediately transfer well-mixed urine from bottom of sterile container into gray-top transport tube with preservative from "Urine C&S Transport Kit"
         – Shake tube vigorously
         – Preserved urine culture specimens (transferred to transport tubes with preservative) can remain at room temperature, or refrigerated, for up to 24 hours

Urine Culture Specimen - Low Volume (less than 3.0 mL):
         – If amount of specimen remaining after urinalysis is less than 3.0 mL (low volume), do not transfer to tube from "Urine C&S Transport Kit" (volume is insufficient)
         – Unpreserved urine culture specimens must be refrigerated within 20 minutes of collection
         – Unpreserved urine culture specimens can remain refrigerated for up to 24 hours

  • Spec Store Transport:
    Refrigerated
  • Spec Stability:
    2 hours room temperature (20-30°C)
    24 hours refrigerated (2-8°C)
  • Spec Reject:
    Urinalysis Specimen:
        – Not refrigerated within 2 hours of collection
        – Refrigerated within 2 hours of collection, but not received for testing within 12 hours of collection
    Urine Culture Specimen:
        – High Volume specimens transferred to “Urine C&S Transport Kit”, but not received for testing within 24 hours of collection
        – Low Volume specimens collected in sterile, plastic container, but not refrigerated within 20 minutes of collection
        – Low Volume specimens collected in sterile, plastic container and refrigerated within 20 minutes of collection, but not received for testing within 12 hours of collection
  • Spec Remarks:
Note: Culture is indicated and will be performed if bacteria is present or WBC is 6 or greater
  • Methodology:
Automated Reflectance Spectrophotometer and Flow Cytometry
  • Use:
Diagnosis and treatment management of urinary tract infection (UTI)
