Examination for RBC and WBC (polymorphonuclear neutrophils, lymphocytes, eosinophils, and monocytes) used to determine meningeal infection and central nervous system malignancy. - Clinical Significance:
The indications for performing a lumbar puncture and examining cerebrospinal fluid can be divided into four major categories of disease: meningeal infection, subarachnoid hemorrhage, central nervous system malignancy, and demyelinating diseases. Polymorphonuclear cells predominate in acute suppurative meningitis due to meningococcus, pneumococcus, streptococcus, etc., and in brain abscess. Small lymphocytes predominate in tuberculous meningitis, syphilis, polio, multiple sclerosis, and encephalitis. - Reference Range:
