72 hours refrigerated (2-8°C) - Spec Reject:
Tube not filled to at least ½ of vacuum capacity
Sample hemolyzed or contains clots - Methodology:
Forward light scatter and fluorescence using Auramine-0 dye - Use:
Evaluate erythropoietic activity; increased in acute and chronic hemorrhage, hemolytic anemias; evaluate erythropoietic response to anti-anemic therapy - Clinical Significance:
The reticulocyte is an immature red blood cell from which the nucleus has been extruded. The reticulocyte count is a measure of effective erythropoiesis. In normal non-anemic state individual reticulocytes mature for 3 days in the marrow and are found in circulating blood only during the fourth day. The ribonucleic acid (RNA) of the reticulocyte disappears about a day after its entry into the blood. The counting of reticulocytes is an indication of the number of red blood cells being delivered by the marrow to the blood. - Reference Range:
Adult males: 0.36-2.02
Adult females: 0.58-2.38
Newborns: 2.0-5.0% - Additional Test Info:
Reticulocyte smears should be made within 6 to 8 hours after collection. If counts are done after longer delays, the probability of underestimation of the reticulocyte count must be kept in mind when interpreting such data. - Day Run:
Sun-Sat (daily) - Time Run:
As received - Time Reported:
4 hours - Test Type:
HEMATOLOGY
