A total blood eosinophil count is of value in excluding the diagnosis of allergic interstitial nephritis - Clinical Significance:
Aid in diagnosis of allergy, parasitic infestations, tuberculosis, brucellosis, collagen disease, Hodgkin’s disease, myeloproliferative diseases, and the acute hypereosinophilic syndrome. Eos are increased with angioeurotic edema, dermatitis, thymic disorders, radiotherapy, splenectomy, convalescence from a febrile illness, and hypoadrenocorticism (Addison’s disease). Decreased eosinophils occur in adrenal cortical hyperplasia (Cushing’s syndrome), cortisone therapy, hormone-secreting tumors, intermenstrual period, acute and chronic inflammation, and anoxia. - Reference Range:
