Screen for carbohydrate malabsorption as a cause of diarrhea, particularly in neonates - Clinical Significance:
Patients with diarrhea who are suspected of carbohydrate malabsorption should have stools tested for both pH and reducing substances - Reference Range:
Neonates (refers to first four weeks after birth): dependent on mode of feeding
Patient’s other than neonates: less than 0.25 g/dL - Additional Test Info:
Neonates who are breast-fed usually have a stool pH that is less than 6 and contain more than 0.25 g/dL reducing substances. Those neonates who are fed a cow’s milk formula which contain 4.8% lactose usually have a pH greater than 6 and rarely have 0.25 g/dL reducing substance present. Antibiotics can alter intestinal flora and affect acid production and pH. False positive results can result due to other reducing substances such as certain drugs that may be present in the stool. - Day Run:
