Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) - Use:
Screen for heavy metal poisoning - Clinical Significance:
The level of trace elements in human body fluids is of great importance for the diagnosis and treatment of a patient’s condition.
It is also crucial to monitor individuals who may be exposed to high levels of toxins, such as lead and arsenic. - Reference Range:
- Arsenic, Whole Blood
- Less than 70 µg/dL
Chronic poisoning: 100-500 µg/dL
Acute poisoning: greater than 500 µg/dL
NOTE: Blood arsenic levels have a short half-life and are useful only within a few days of exposure - Cadmium, Whole Blood
- Less than 5.0 µg/dL
Values indicating excessive exposure: greater than 10 µg/dL
Acute toxicity: greater than 50 µg/dL - Mercury, Whole Blood
- Less than 5 µg/dL
Mild routine exposure during work, such as dentist: less than 15 µg/dL
Significant toxic exposure: greater than 50 µg/dL - Lead, Whole Blood
- Adult: less than 20 µg/dL
Occupationally Lead-Exposed Adult: less than or equal to 40 µg/dL
Toxic: equal to or greater than 60 µg/dL
Children:CDC Classification for Children Class Lead µg/dL Comment I ≤ 9 Not considered "lead-poisoned" IIA 10–14 Rescreen frequently and consider prevention activities IIB 15–19 Should receive nutritional and educational interventions III 20–44 Should receive environmental evaluation; consider chelation therapy IV 45–69 Needs environmental intervention and chelation therapy V ≥ 70 Medical emergency; medical and environmental interventions should begin immediately
