Measurement of excess 13CO2 in the breath is a widely accepted technique for the detection of the presence or absence of H. pylori, the bacterium responsible for more than 80% of peptic ulcer disease. Breath testing is one of only a few techniques that can detect an active infection. The presence of H. pylori can be verified in symptomatic patients and drug therapy which is more than 90% effective can be prescribed. A second test after completion of therapy can verify the eradication of H. pylori. - Reference Range:
- Adult (Equal to or greater than 18 years old): Cutoff point at DOB (Delta Over Baseline) of 2.4 to distinguish H. pylori infection positive and negative results
- Note: Test cannot be performed on any patient less than 18 years of age
