  • Clinical Significance:
The direct antiglobulin (Coombs) test is a one-stage test for the detection of in vivo red cell sensitization. It is commonly used in the diagnosis of hemolytic disease of the newborn, autoimmune hemolytic anemia, drug-induced red cell sensitization, and for investigation of transfusion reactions. Depending on the type of specimen used, a positive reaction indicates the presence of antibodies and/or complement attached to the cell surface.
