  • Methodology:
    Antigen-Antibody Reaction
    Qualitative Bleed Screen (agglutination)
  • Use:
Used to determine the presence of (D) positive fetal cells in the maternal circulation
  • Clinical Significance:

Every Rh-negative (weak D negative) mother who delivers or aborts a fetus after twelve weeks gestation must have a qualitative fetal-maternal bleed screen test by agglutination performed to determine the presence of (D) positive fetal cells in the maternal circulation.

NOTE: If the newborn types Rh-positive (weak D), a quantitative fetal-maternal bleed test must be performed.

  • Reference Range:

    Negative

    Note:
    Rh Immune Globulin Dosing:
If the qualitative fetal-maternal bleed screen test is negative, one (1) vial of Rh immune globulin is the suggested dose to be administered to the mother.
If the qualitative fetal-maternal bleed screen test is positive, a quantitative fetal-maternal bleed test will be performed and Rh immune globulin dosing will be calculated based upon the quantitative test results.
