Avoid collection of specimens during menstruation, periods of active bleeding, or inflammatory episodes
Do not use lubricant on the speculum (run speculum under water to ease insertion)
Rinse protective gloves to minimize starch granules - Spec Collect:
First, use a plastic spatula to obtain adequate material from the ectocervix
Rinse spatula in PreservCyt® solution at least 10 times to ensure prompt fixation and cell preservation
Discard the spatula
Next, use the "cytobrush" to sample the endocervix by inserting the brush until only the bottom-most fibers are exposed
Slowly rotate the cytobrush one quarter turn or one half turn in one direction – do not over-rotate
Rinse the cytobrush in the same PreservCyt® solution vial by rotating the device in the solution 10 times while pushing against the vial wall
Discard the cytobrush
Note: Do not place cytobrush in vial as brush may damage ThinPrep processing instrument
Cap the sample vial and tighten until the black torque line on the cap passes the black line on the vial
Print the patient's name on the vial label on the appropriate line
Place a control label from requisition onto the vial adjacent to the patient's name - Spec Process:
